Polish Childhood Injury Register |
| Project description: |
The aim of this project is to reduce the current burden of childhood injury among Polish residents by developing a surveillance system for capturing information about injuries occurring in children and teenagers under the age of 18, and by analyzing data collected through this module to characterize the population of children experiencing injuries, and to identify specific patterns among this population and medical field. The aim of this project is compatible with the Strategic Goal 3 of the National Health Programme (2007-2015): "Decreasing the number of accidental injuries and their health consequences". Proposed project will provide important tool for policy makers responsible for Operational Goal 8 of the National Health Programme (2007-2015) aimed at prevention of common children and adolescents health problems. Establisment of Injury Register is recommended by both National Health Programme (2007-2015) and Children's Environment and Health Action Plan for Europe - National Focal Point in Poland.
This project will be implemented in three phases over the course of 30 months. Each of the three phases can be viewed as an independent project with its own end report and recommendations to the involved parties.
Phase I (Months 1 - 8): Preparation of surveillance module.
This project will develop a hospital-based injury data collection based on real-time capture of patient data at the time the patient presents for treatment of injury.
Phase II (Months 9 - 20): Pilot surveillance module: data collection pilot. The registration process will be piloted at four to six selected sites who have agreed to participate in this project, and data on childhood and adolescent injuries will be collected for 12 months. Data collected will be analyzed and interpreted during Phase III of the project.
Phase III (Months 21 - 30): Analysis of pilot data and adaptation of data collection module.
Data collected from 12 months of surveillance will be cleaned and analyzed. Baseline data will be established, and patterns in childhood and adolescent injury in the form of descriptive statistics will be analyzed. Analyses will be summarized in a comprehensive report to be communicated to relevant stakeholders, as well as relevant scientific publications.
Apply lessons from project to the improvement of childhood injury prevention policies and activities. Through intense collaboration and interaction with other ongoing quality improvement activities in the field of childhood injury prevention in Poland, this project will influence prevention activities. Further, specific policy recommendations will be made based upon project results, and presented to relevant stakeholders.
Findings from each phase may be integrated into further parallel activities in the field of childhood injury surveillance and prevention. The completion of all three phases will provide optimal cost-effective contribution toward meeting Poland’s childhood health needs. |
